چکیده

Feed producers are faced with choosing from a myriad of growth promoting substances all claimed to improve performance and have some advantage over competitive products. In most cases, these products are "nonnutritional" and contain nothing that contributes directly toward meeting the animals requirement for nutrients. Yet, many have been confirmed to be highly cost-effective when added to feeds. The selection of a growth promotant must be based on safety and probability to give high economic returns. The most widely used are the antimicrobial agents, including antibiotics. In recent years, there has been a flurry of interest in the use of other non-nutritive substances such as acidifiers, probiotics, enzymes, herbal products, beta-agonists, microflora enhancers and immunomodulators. New entries into the market are common each year, as are new research reports on products and product combinations. The purpose of this paper is to present an overview on the use and mode of action of various growth promoting substances, give some perspectives that may assist in product selection based on safety and farm conditions, and discuss future directions.

The Potential Role of Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations in Infectious Disease Epidemics and Antibiotic Resistance

The industrialization of livestock production and the widespread use of nontherapeutic antimicrobial growth promotants has intensified the risk for the emergence of new, more virulent, or more resistant microorganisms. These have reduced the effectiveness of several classes of antibiotics for treating infections in humans and livestock. Recent outbreaks of virulent strains of influenza have ari...

The role of exogenous enzymes in promoting growth and improving nutrient digestibility in poultry

The value of dietary exogenous enzymes in promoting growth and efficiency of feed utilization is well recognized in poultry industry. In a case of high-cost yellow corn, several feed producers are choosing to replace yellow corn with other ingredients that have lower nutritional value like triticale, wheat, barley or sorghum. These crops are rich in non-starch polysaccharides (NSPs), and there ...

Use of phytogenic products as feed additives for swine and poultry.

This article summarizes the experimental knowledge on efficacy, possible modes of action, and aspects of application of phytogenic products as feed additives for swine and poultry. Phytogenic feed additives comprise a wide variety of herbs, spices, and products derived thereof, and are mainly essential oils. The assumption that phytogenic compounds might improve the palatability of feed has not...

Comparison of alternative beef production systems based on forage finishing or grain-forage diets with or without growth promotants: 1. Feedlot performance, carcass quality, and production costs.

Forty Angus-cross steers were used to evaluate 5 beef cattle management regimens for their effect on growth performance, carcass characteristics, and cost of production. A 98-d growing phase was incorporated using grass silage with or without growth promotants (trenbolone acetate + estradiol implants, and monensin in the feed) or soybean meal. Dietary treatments in the finishing phase were deve...
